Just one year since last year’s deadly bombing at the Boston Marathon, an American man wins the race. Meb Keflezighi is the first American to win the Boston Marathon since 1983. However, for Keflezighi and many of the other 36,000 runners, it was less about the “race” and more about remembering the events of last year’s event and the lives lost as a result. Keflezighi said, “I want to do it for Boston.” The course was packed with fans waving American flags. As Keflezighi neared the finish line, the cheering was “deafening.”

Officials allowed for 9,000 more participants this year, allowing the 5,000 participants from last year who were still on the course when the bombs exploded an opportunity to finish the race this year. Security was tight with many more precautions in place. Three people were killed in the bombing last year; many were injured and lost limbs. The one surviving brother accused in the bombing will stand trial in November.
