The Lee Resolution of Independence was adopted in a closed session by the Continental Congress July 2, 1776. From the beginning, though, Americans have celebrated the date on the Declaration of Independence, which was adopted two days later. Since then, every July 4th, families, friends, and communities across the country celebrate Independence Day with frankfurters, pie, and fireworks. Fireworks, in fact, have become the centerpiece of Independence Day celebrations for most.

Tragically, 11 people were reportedly killed last year in fireworks-related accidents and another 10,000 were injured. Children under 15 years of age are the most likely victims but two of those who reportedly died last year were senior citizens. In 2014, sparklers and rockets accounted for more than 23 percent of all estimated fireworks injuries. Consumers who decide to purchase legal fireworks are urged to take these safety steps:

Some basic countermeasures may be implemented to decrease risk of death and/or injury this Independence Day. Those countermeasures include the following:

· Keep all fireworks away from children and do not allow them to handle any;

· Keep sparklers out of the reach of children at all times because 23 percent of injuries and deaths are reportedly caused by sparklers;

· Never purchase unlicensed or contraband fireworks;

· Never handle any fireworks packaged in brown paper because these are for professional displays only;

· Always maintain fire safety equipment, such as extinguishers and hoses, nearby in case of an accident; and

· Do not attempt to re-ignite or handle any fireworks that have malfunctioned.
