Types of Distracted Driving
There are three main types of driver distraction: manual, visual, and cognitive.
Anything that takes one's hands off the wheel, their eyes off the
road, or their mind off the primary task of driving, is a form of driver
Common causes of truck driver distraction:
- Texting while driving
- Eating while driving
- Talking on a cellular phone
- Using a CB radio while driving
- Reading a map
The most alarming form of driver distraction is texting while driving.
The NHTSA reports that texting takes one's eyes off the road for 4.6
seconds, which is the equivalent of driving the length of a football field
at 55 mph blindfolded.
FMCSA Restrictions on Texting & Mobile Devices
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) published rules
specifically prohibiting truck drivers from doing the following:
- Entering a text
- Reading a text
- Instant messaging
- Using voice commands
The FMCSA restricts truck drivers from reaching or holding a mobile phone
to conduct a voice communication, and they cannot dial or press more than
a single button. The rule also prohibits unsafe reaching for a device,
holding a cell phone, or pressing multiple buttons.
For CMV drivers who dial on a cell phone while driving, the odds of being
in a dangerous situation are six times greater than for those who do not.
According to the FMCSA, research shows that the odds of being involved
in a crash, near-crash, or lane deviation are 23.2 times greater for truck
drivers who text while driving, versus those who do not.
